You can apply to be a governor through a number of routes. Nearly all governors fall into one of the following categories:

Parent Governors |
Usually parents with a child at the school. They are elected by parentsof children at the school. If there are not enough candidates for the vacancies, parent governors are appointed by the governing body on a prescribed basis. |

Staff Governors |
These comprise of headteacher, a member of the teaching staff and, where applicable, a member of the non-teaching staff. |
|
LEA Governors |
People appointed by the council that maintains the school. Candidates are appointed irrespective of any political affiliation or preference. |

Community Governors |
Members of the public appointed by the governing body to represent community interests. They are committed to the good governance and success of the school. They may or may not be local residents. |

Foundation Governors |
People appointed by the school’s founding body, church or other organisation named in the school’s Instrument of Government (if the school has a religious character). The foundation governors must have a commitment to preserve and thus develop the religious ethos. |
|
Sponsor Governors |
People who give substantial assistance to the school; financially in kind or providing services. They are appointed by the governing body. It is at the governing body’s discretion whether or not they choose to appoint this category of governor (maximum 2). Nominations are sought from the sponsors. |
