The Education Preparation Unit

The Education Preparation Unit (EPU) is a service that supports children within the Foundation Stage, aged three to five years who have, or are likely to have, significant emotional and / or behavioural difficulties.

The support will be provided where it is needed, at the unit or through outreach visits to the setting. The staff at the EPU plan for and work towards the Early Learning Goals.

When a referral is made to the EPU a contact will be made within four weeks.

A member of the EPU staff will make an appointment to observe the child within the setting and gather more information from staff.

Feedback from the observation and the information gathered will be given and future needs assessed.

Depending on the child’s needs, any or all of the following may be offered:

  • a home visit
  • strategies and advice
  • outreach support
  • a placement within the unit.

Meetings to review the child’s progress and to set targets will be arranged.

Staff and / or parents may be invited to observe the child at the unit.
