The Child Development Centre (CDC) is located in St Nicholas House in Scunthorpe. This is a Health Authority provision. Many of the paediatric therapy services are based here including the Education Service for pre-school children.
The services work together to assess the needs of, and provide input for, young children with a wide range of special needs.
The Consultant Paediatrician refers pre-school children with difficulties for medical assessment. Professionals working with young children make referrals to the therapists and education service.
Libby Brankin (teacher) and Carol Turpin (nursery nurse) run the education groups.
Up to two, 2 hour sessions each week in the nursery room will be offered to a child referred to the education service.
The assessment and developmental curriculum is based around play activities.
Support and advice is also offered to pre-school groups. Transitional support is offered to mainstream schools that admit children who have attended the education groups.
Visits to observe Education Service groups from early years practitioners is welcomed. The SENCO support team make visits to pre-schools. This support will include the setting and reviewing of Individual Education Plan (IEP) targets for children at Early Years Action Plus. Advice is given relating to the use of appropriate strategies and resources.
