Pupils will be loaned an instrument wherever possible or given information about hire purchase or VAT free purchase.
Hire
Several retail outlets throughout the country operate hire schemes for musical instruments. These are usually based on a minimum hire period of one term. Music Support Service staff can help parents locate and evaluate suitable schemes.
Purchase
Councils and schools can obtain instruments on behalf of parents at a substantial discount (usually 25 per cent - 30 per cent) off the retail price. Also, if the instrument is being bought for a pupil who is having lessons in school time from a teacher employed by a council music service, the purchase can be made VAT free. Parents who are interested should discuss this with the school instrumental teacher first.
