The North Lincolnshire Music Centre runs every Saturday during term time from 9.45am to 12.15pm and is based at John Leggott College, Scunthorpe. It offers the opportunity for children from the area to play in larger ensembles ranging from training groups to advanced orchestras and bands.
The skills developed in ensemble music making are invaluable and complement those acquired in instrumental lessons. It is also one of the most rewarding and enjoyable aspects of being a musician.
Rehearsals for each group are fortnightly on alternate Saturdays as a Day A or a Day B as follows:
Day A
- Youth Symphony Orchestra
- Third Concert Band
Day B
- Youth Concert Band
- Second Concert Band
- Youth String Orchestra
- First String Orchestra
There is also a Youth Swing Band which rehearses on Wednesday evenings at John Leggott College from 5pm until 6.30pm.
The Youth Swing Band performs around the North Lincolnshire area and in the community at special events whenever possible.
The members of the Youth Concert Band, Youth Symphony Orchestra and Youth Swing Band also have the opportunity, every two years to travel abroad and perform on musical tours.
Most children start off in the First String Orchestra or Third Concert Band by teacher recommendation, the only requirement being that they be of grade 1 standard on their instrument. Progress through the groups after this is by audition.
Grade 3 standard is required for the Second Concert Band and Swing Band, then Grade 5 or above for the Youth Symphony Orchestra and Youth Concert Band.
