Music Centres

The North Lincolnshire music centre runs every Saturday from 9.45am to 12.15pm at John Leggott College. This is during term time only. It offers the opportunity for pupils from the whole area to play in large ensembles. These range from training groups to advanced orchestras and bands.

Rehearsals for each group are fortnightly on alternate Saturdays (A/B), as follows:

DAY A DAY B
Youth symphony orchestra Youth concert band
Third concert band Second concert band
  Youth string orchestra

The youth swing band meets on alternate Wednesday evenings from 5pm to 6.30pm. The second (training) swing band meets on intervening Wednesdays from 5pm to 6.30pm. The youth choir meets on an intermittent basis by invitation.

It is possible for pupils to be in more than one group: e.g. a pupil may play in the youth symphony orchestra, youth concert band and swing bands. Admission to the ensembles, except to youth string orchestra or third concert band, is by audition. Most pupils start in the youth string orchestra or third concert band by teacher recommendation. They usually progress into second orchestra and second concert band after achieving a minimum grade III standard. Admission to one of the advanced ensembles is through audition assessment and pupils are offered places when vacancies arise.

Any queries relating to the music centre should be directed to Miss E. P. Hardy, c/o John Leggott College, West Common Lane, Scunthorpe, DN17 1DS. Tel: (01724) 297157.

The music support service ensembles do not replace school commitments. Great care is taken to avoid any clashes of interest. These groups exist to provide a wider range of musical opportunities than is possible in an individual school.
