The council provides home tuition for pupils who cannot attend school for periods of three weeks or more due to physical and/or medical reasons.
Pupils who are recovering at home following hospitalisation receive integrated hospital/home tuition.
Pupils whose condition results in time off school may be entitled to ‘third day of absence’ tuition. This means that if they are going to be absent from school for longer than three days, tuition can be started straight away without going through the referral system each time. This also applies to children who are admitted to hospital regularly.
Pupils currently receive five hours tuition per week if the pupil is well enough. But this is subject to review. If there is time, the council gives Key Stage 4 pupils more than this. Although this depends on student numbers.
The team liaises closely between tutor, school, parents, pupil and any other agencies involved.
The tuition is started by an open referral system.
Most requests come from either:
- the school
- education welfare officer
- clinical medical officer
- GP
- health visitor
- parent or guardian.
A letter is then sent to the clinical medical officer requesting a home visit. This is to authorise the length of tuition and home clearance.
The pupil is allocated a tutor as soon as authorisation has been received for the tuition to begin. Pupils in Key Stage 4 benefit from the expertise of different tutors for different subjects.
Many of our pupils have obtained excellent results in public exams. Staff are provided to enable students to take exams at home.
All of our teachers are fully trained teachers who have had many years experience of teaching both in schools and in the home.
