Education Welfare Service
The Education Welfare Service plays a key role in improving attendance at school and reducing truancy.
It liaises with schools on a regular basis to discuss individual pupils whose attendance or punctuality is causing concern.
Education Welfare Officers provide advice and support to parents and carers to help resolve problems which affect the school attendance of children and young people. They help them take full advantage of their educational provision and maximise their life chances and opportunities.
Education Welfare Officers help parents to carry out their legal responsibilities to make sure their children attend school regularly.
The team uses a fast track to prosecution case management system.
Each school has a named Education Welfare Officer. Referrals are received from schools, parents, pupils and other agencies.
The team advises and supports children, families, schools and other agencies on a range of issues including:
- School attendance
- Holidays in term time
- Exclusion from school
- Juvenile employment and entertainment
- Registration of pupils and category of absence.
Education Welfare Officers contribute to multi-agency initiatives including:
- Youth justice
- Child protection
- Common assessment
- Child in need
- Truancy sweeps
- Parenting contracts
- Social inclusion
