City and Guilds 7303 Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Sector

Duration: 15 sessions of three hours

This Level 3 award is aimed at people who work, or want to work, as trainers or tutors in further education, adult and community education, and work-based learning in industry and the public sector.

The City and Guilds 7303 is the ‘threshold’ to teach in the post-16 sector. It relates to the new Professional Standards for Teachers, tutors and trainers in the lifelong learning sector set out by Lifelong Learning UK.

The 7303 is designed to enable candidates to:

·                     Adopt an integrative approach to the theory and practice of teaching and training

·                    Reflect on their own previous/current levels of experience, practice and skills, and identify areas for development

·                     Develop knowledge of the principles of learning, teaching, assessment and evaluation

·                     Develop their own communication and interpersonal skills

·                     Develop an awareness of their professional role and responsibilities.

The qualification consists of five sections based on the theory and practice of teaching/training. They are:

·                     Section 1: Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in

relation to teaching

·                     Section 2: Understand appropriate teaching and training approaches in the specialist area

·                     Section 3: Demonstrate session planning skills

·                     Section 4: Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate learners

·                     Section 5: Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping.

In addition to written assignments relating to each section, candidates will be required to keep a personal development journal throughout the course which enables them to record and reflect on all aspects of their teaching and learning experiences and identify relevant developmental areas.

An observation by the candidate of an experienced practitioner in their subject area is also incorporated into the course as developmental activity.

Assessment on the course is continuous through the mandatory written assignments and observations of delivery of teaching/training. To achieve the award, candidate’s completed work is internally assessed, then internally verified by the Adult Education Service and finally externally verified by City and Guilds.

The fifteen classroom sessions will involve a range of teaching methods and activities. Active candidate participation, discussion, evaluation and feedback are promoted and seen as a fundamental part of the course. Candidates will also be encouraged to undertake relevant self-study and research in support of their written work. Prospective candidates need to be fully aware of the commitment and workload involved on this Level 3 professional qualification.

Successful completion of the award and gaining relevant teaching or training work would provide a progression route and six credit transfer points to:

·                     City and Guilds 7304 Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)

·                     or City and Guilds 7305 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS) or the

·                     Certificate of Education or PGCE as appropriate.

Interested candidates should ideally be qualified to Level 3 in their subject area and hold an appropriate English/literacy qualification at minimum of Level 2. Acceptance on to the course is subject to evidence of appropriate qualifications and/or experience, a pre-course written assignment and a short interview.
