Dog breeding licence

Breeding of Dogs Act 1973

A licence is required by anyone who keeps a bitch at any premises, where the bitch has a litter of puppies and four or more other litters are born to bitches kept by the person:

  • at the same premises;
  • elsewhere;
  • as part of a breeding arrangement with another person.

Fees and charges

You can find the fee for this licence by going to our licence fee register.

Timescale

We aim to deal with applications within seven to 14 days, but the issue of the licence is subject to a satisfactory veterinary report arranged by the council. Tacit consent does not apply. This means that you must wait to hear whether the council has granted your licence.
