Registering to vote

To be able to vote in local, national and European elections, you must be on the Electoral Register. To find out if you are already registered call the council on 01724 296245.

To find out if you qualify to go on the register, please read below.

Why should I register?

You can only vote in elections if your name is on the register of electors for your area. We update the electoral register every month, except from September to November when we’re putting together the new register. You have to apply at the beginning of a month to have your details updated on the next month’s register.

How do I register?

If you think you may not be on the electoral register and you wish to register (if you have not already done so) please complete the registration form (ER3).

You can also apply online at www.registerbyinternet.com/northlincs/ or by 24-hour telephone on 0800 197 9888.

What happens if I'm new to the area?

If you’ve moved since 15 October last year and are eligible to be registered, we can add your name to the register. Just fill in the registration form (ER3) .

What does this form do?

Filling in this form will let us add your name, and other people living in your home, to the electoral register for. Each person who is applying to be on the register must sign the form.

Who can register?

To register, you must be a British or Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland. If you are a citizen of a European Union country other than Britain or Ireland, you can register to vote in council and European Parliamentary elections only. If you are a citizen of any other country, you cannot register to vote.

You have to be 18 to vote. But if you are 16 or 17 years old you can register, but must include your date of birth. This means that you’ll be able to vote as soon as you turn 18.

If you are in the armed forces, you can register using the standard electoral registration form, or you can register as a service voter.

If you live abroad for more than six months you must register as an overseas elector.

Residents of mental hospitals, homeless people and remand prisoners can register on a special form. You can get these from the council's Elections Office on 01724 296245. Convicted prisoners aren’t eligible to vote.

When will you add my name?

We will add your name to the register within six weeks of your application. We have a timetable of monthly revision dates.

Can’t vote in person?

Anyone can apply for a postal vote at any election. You can apply for someone else to vote for you if, for example, you are blind or disabled, or if you will be away from home during an election. Please contact the council's Elections Office for more information. Telephone 01724 296245; fax 01724 296066 or e-mail anthia.taylor@northlincs.gov.uk or sandra.donaldson@northlincs.gov.uk.

Your choice

If you DO tick the box on the voter registration form, your name and address will only appear on the full register, which will only be used for certain lawful purposes, such as elections, law enforcement and checking applications for credit.

If you do NOT tick the box on the voter registration form, your name will also appear on the edited version of the register, which anyone can buy.

Note: The above forms are in Adobe Acrobat (PDF) format and will require appropriate software to view and print. An Adobe Acrobat reader can be downloaded free from the Adobe website (full instructions for downloading the reader are provided on the website).
