How to become a councillor

The council has 43 councillors. They each represent one of North Lincolnshire’s 17 wards. Elections are held every four years, meaning that elected councillors serve for four years.

Councillors have a number of different roles, including:

  • Attending full council meetings to help set the council’s priorities and budget.
  • Serve on committees, scrutiny panels and represent the council at other local meetings.
  • Represent the residents in their ward by holding surgeries and dealing with individual enquiries.

All councillors have to sign up to the council’s code of conduct. It provides clear rules about openness and honesty. This helps to ensure high standards.

Town and parish councils

Some areas of North Lincolnshire are also covered by town and parish councils. Town and parish councillors serve a four year term of office, meaning that elections are held every four years. There are 49 parish councils and 8 town councils in North Lincolnshire.
