Council diversity

"Valuing Diversity"

We each have our own unique needs, skills, qualities and abilities. The council believes that this diversity should be valued. It wants to make sure that its services meet the needs of everyone. The council treats everyone as an individual. It will not unfairly discriminate on any grounds.

Social inclusion forms an important part of the council’s approach to diversity. Its workforce and the communities it serves make up a diverse population. This population has a range of personal differences, including:

  • ability
  • age
  • appearance
  • background
  • caring responsibilities
  • criminal conviction
  • cultural behaviour
  • disability
  • gender
  • geographic location
  • health status
  • marital status
  • personality
  • political affiliation
  • race
  • religious belief
  • sexual orientation
  • socio-economic status

These are just a few examples. But there are many other differences that could make people a target for prejudice and discrimination.

The council believes that valuing diversity:

  • Offers a more creative way of looking at equality.
  • Combats:
    • prejudice
    • stereotyping
    • harassment
    • undignified behaviour.
  • Promotes the concept of equal opportunities beyond what is needed by law.
  • Is socially desired and is morally right.
  • Embraces the challenge of serving people with diverse needs.
  • Avoids categorising people into 'pigeon holes'.
  • Acknowledges that each person is unique. And they have different skills and talents that, if harnessed, will benefit the community.
  • Is the responsibility of everyone.
