What happens if you do not pay

Council tax is payable in ten monthly instalments from April to January. It is currently due on 22nd of the month. However, if you pay by Direct Debit there is a choice of instalment dates - 2nd, 8th, 15th or 22nd of the month.

The majority of council tax payers pay their accounts on time each month. It is therefore important to them and the council that anyone who does not pay is pursued for payment quickly. This ensures arrears are kept to a minimum and that council tax is kept as low as possible for everyone.

The following information briefly explains the process that we follow if you do not pay your council tax.

Recovery of council tax

There are three main stages of council tax recovery. It is important that the instalments are paid when they are due:

Click on the links above for more information on each of the stages. To avoid the above action you must pay your council tax when it is due. If you are unable to pay your council tax when it is due you must contact the section immediately.

Please note: Even if you are appealing against your council tax you must continue to pay the instalments until a decision has been reached.

If you are in financial difficulties due to low income you may be entitled to council tax benefit or housing benefit - please apply as soon as possible.
