Council tax reductions for disabled people

Council tax reductions for disabled people are available under certain circumstances.

You may be entitled to a reduction if there is sufficient floor space within the home to allow the disabled person to use a wheelchair, or if your home contains a room which is mainly used by someone with a disability. For example, the room could be an extra bathroom, second kitchen or a bedroom on the ground floor of a home with two or more floors.

This reduction is to make sure people don't pay more council tax on account of extra space or facilities needed for someone with a disability. However, it does not apply if the only part of your home that has been adapted is your normal kitchen, bathroom or toilet.

If you have been granted a disability reduction, this will appear on the front of your bill. This reduction is achieved by applying the next lowest valuation band to the property when calculating the charge (i.e. a property in Band C will be charged at Band B). Bills for Band A properties will be reduced by one-sixth of the charge.

If you have not been given a reduction but think that you should get one, please print out the attachment and complete, or contact the council tax section.

Your home may have features added for a resident with disabilities which reduce its value. If you think that these were not taken into account in the valuation band you should write to:
