The European Social Fund (ESF) aims to contribute towards sustainable growth in the size and skills of the workforce in the Yorkshire and Humber Region. ESF funds in the region are awarded under two priorities:
- Extending employment opportunities
- Developing a skilled and adaptable workforce.

The total funding allocated to Yorkshire and Humber for the 2007 to 2013 programme is approximately £258-million.
Any legally-constituted organisation or partnership from the public sector, higher and further education, and the voluntary/community sector can apply.
