Sustainable Community Strategy 2006

"Working together to make a better future for the people of North Lincolnshire"

Local people want greater choice about improving their local areas and more say in how this is to be done. The Government recognises this and wants to improve the way that local councils and other organisations plan for the future.

The Government has asked us to work together to publish a sustainable community strategy that sets out how we will work with local people to improve their quality of life. Many Faces, One Community outlines a series of improvements we want for our area by 2010.

The North Lincolnshire Strategic Partnership

The North Lincolnshire Strategic Partnership (NLSP) is responsible for delivering this strategy. It's made up of people from the business, public, faith and voluntary and community sectors; people who are senior enough to decide future plans and commit their organisation to implementing this strategy.

The partnership is accountable to a much larger group than any single organisation. It discusses all the decisions it makes openly with partner organisations and are subject to public scrutiny.

All partners are committed to working together to make a better future for the people of North Lincolnshire. And they will coordinate their efforts to ensure that improvements are made between now and 2010.

Our vision

North Lincolnshire is a place where we all:

  • live in decent homes and safe neighbourhoods and have choices about our future
  • have the chance to learn, develop skills and work in satisfying jobs
  • lead healthy lifestyles and make use of a wide range of quality leisure and cultural facilities
  • make special efforts to improve conditions for the least well off in our communities and ensure that quality of life improves for everyone over the next 10 years
  • take pride in our area, respect our neighbours, and protect our natural environment.

Your views

Widespread consultation took place in Autumn 2005. This has been vital in helping to shape the sustainable community strategy. We asked for your views on our achievements over the last three years, as well as on those areas still in need of improvement. We will do what we can to make sure these issues are tackled. However, the pace of change will have to be balanced against the demands of central government as well as our current financial resources. We will not be able to do everything at once but we will prioritise those improvements that are likely to make the biggest impact on local quality of life. These improvements will fall into short (up to two years), medium (two to five years), and long projects (over five years).

Our vision for North Lincolnshire is deliberately long term, as many challenges are deep rooted and will take time to address. However we recognise that our priorities may change in response to fast moving social, economic or environmental trends and we want to make sure this strategy remains up to date. We will continue to listen to your views and will regularly review key issues and priorities to ensure they are based on a clear understanding of how you would like North Lincolnshire to look in the future.

We will produce an annual action plan setting out our targets for each year and how these will be met. We will also publish an annual performance plan so that people can see the progress we are making.

Communities Count is a small research team that helps us monitor quality of life in North Lincolnshire and measure our progress towards shared goals. You can find out more about the information it collects on the Communities Count website.

Each June there will be an annual general meeting of the NLSP. This will be an open event to celebrate its achievements, and for the partnership to engage with the general public.

Shared ambitions

We have developed four ambitions shared by all the NLSP partners to help us focus our efforts on improving the area, our communities, and the lives of individual residents. These shared ambitions are:

  • an area that is thriving
  • communities that are confident and caring
  • individuals can see the difference
  • everyone works together for the benefit of the area.
