Search for and order birth, death and marriage certificates online

With genealogy becoming more popular than ever, we've made it easier to trace your relatives with our exciting new online search and buy facility.

You can now access our birth, death and marriage indexes with the click of a button and get a copy of certificates relating to your family members.

The council's register office holds all birth, death and marriage registers for North Lincolnshire from 1837 to the current date.

To help you in your search, we've provided a map of the area covered by North Lincolnshire This shows all the towns and villages covered by this registration district.

How do I use the new search and buy facility?

First you need to decide whether you wish to search for a birth, death or marriage certificate. To find an entry, you'll need to know the following:

Birth certificates

You must give the year and all or part of the surname. You can narrow the search by providing all or part of the forename. If you're not sure of the year you can try different years.

Once you've entered the search information, you'll see a list of all entries fitting the search criteria. To order a certificate just click on the entry you need and follow the simple online ordering instructions.

Marriage certificates

Again, you must give the year and all or part of the surname. You can narrow the search by providing all or part of the forename. If you're not sure of the year you can try searching different years.

Once you've entered the search information, you'll see a list of all relevant entries. On the marriages index, there's a facility to view related records. This means you can cross check the names of both the bride and groom. And to order a certificate simply click on the entry you want and follow the instructions.

Whilst we hold the records for all marriages taking place in North Lincolnshire, there are some anomalies. There are some churches where registers have not yet been deposited with us and those records will not show up on these indexes. Those churches are: St.Johns in Alkborough, St.Mary's in Garthorpe, The Ascension in Melton Ross, Christ Church in New Holland, Church of Reconciliation in Old Brumby, St.John's in Whitton, St.Joseph and St.Lymphna in Luddington and Winteringham Methodist Church.

If the marriage entry you require may have taken place in any of these churches, please contact us for advice on applying for a certified copy of that entry. Our telephone number is 01724 843915 or you can email us at Alison.prestwood@northlincs.gov.uk or Chris.bradbury@northlincs.gov.uk

There are also some instances where the entry you re applying for may be in a register which is still held by the church. In these cases we will contact you and explain how you should apply for a certified copy from the church.

Death certificates

The death indexes are updated regularly as and when records are added.

The current death indexes available for you to search are from:

  • 1837 to 1968
  • 1992 to 2006

You must give the year and all or part of the surname. You can narrow the search by providing all or part of the forename. If you're not sure of the year you can try different years.

Once you've entered the search information, you'll see a list of all entries fitting the search criteria. To order a certificate just click on the entry you need and follow the simple online ordering instructions.

If the entry you need falls outside these years, please email or write to the Register Office and the staff will be happy to carry out a manual search.

To buy a certificate

There are various ways you can buy a certified copy of the relevant entry. You can:

  • Order and pay on our secure online site by using a debit or credit card
  • Telephone the register office on 01724 843915 and pay by credit or credit card
  • Write to us enclosing details of the entry required, a cheque made payable to North Lincolnshire Council and a stamped addressed envelope. Our address is: North Lincolnshire Register Office, 92 Oswald Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire, DN15 79A.

The current fee is £7 for each certificate.

How quickly will I receive my certificate?

The certificate will be processed within one working day and sent out by second class post (unless you've sent us a stamped addressed envelope).

What if the certificate is not the one I need?

We can only send you the certificate applied for. In cases with common names it may be difficult to determine which certificate you need.

If you are not confident that the certificate applied for is the correct entry, it is best to either e-mail or write to ask us to check.

Please note that we cannot give a refund if you later find that it is not the right certificate.

There are also ancestry and genealogy websites that provide information and advice on how to trace your family tree.
