Starting a new business

When thinking about setting up a small business, a major factor is the fear of hurdles and regulations. There is also worry about the success of the venture. There are agencies that can provide help and advice to overcome these obstacles.

Business Link Yorkshire

Business Link Yorkshire can give support and advice for business at any stage of their development. It provides support with:

  • Business plans and strategies
  • Training
  • IT
  • Marketing

The agency aims to make sure new businesses thrive and grow. This makes the whole experience of starting a new business less daunting.

For more information of the services offered by Business Link Yorkshire you can phone on 08456 048 048. Or visit the Business Link Yorkshire website.

Council business services

The council provides a wide range of services to local businesses. The Economic Development team plays a key role to encourage investment in the area, therefore increasing jobs. They can also support existing businesses to develop and expand. The council also provides property and land to support the needs of local businesses.

Co-operative development

The usual approach when starting a business is to 'go it alone'. An alternative is to start a co-operative.

A co-operative is an easy way for two or more people to set up a business, which helps to reduce personal risk involved.  In a co-operative business everyone who works and remains within it is given a say in how the firm is run and a share in the profits and ownership.

Small businesses that adopt a co-operative structure are twice as likely to survive the critical first three years compared to sole traders or partnerships.

The council provides the same support to co-operatives as it does to other business and can offer advice about how to set up a co-operative business.
