Landfill Tax Credit Scheme

The Landfill Tax scheme was introduced in 1996 to reflect the environmental impact of landfill and to promote more sustainable waste management practices.

From 1 October landfill operators have collected and paid tax to HM Customs and Excise. The Tax Credit Scheme allows landfill operators to contribute money to any accredited environmental body and claim tax credit of 90 per cent for use by the body for approved environmental purposes.

These can cover:

  • Land reclamation, remediation or restoration
  • Research and education on sustainable waste management
  • Prevention of pollution or mitigating its effects on land
  • Public parks or amenities in the vicinity of landfill sites
  • Buildings of religious, historic or architectural interest situated in the vicinity of landfill sites and not operated with a view to profit.

The council is working with Enventure, an environmental body to encourage organisations in North Lincolnshire to take advantage of the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme.
