The European Union Structural Funds provide EU member states and regions within these states with financial help.
This helps these regions to overcome and reduce economic and social problems. The UK and the Yorkshire and Humber region have benefited from these funds since the 1990s. They have used the funds to help deliver a range of projects which have strengthened the economy.
The current Structural Funds Programme comes to an end on 31 December 2006. Due to enlargement of the EU there will be less funding available for the UK as structural funds are concentrated on the poorest regions.
Objectives for the funds
There will be three objectives for the funds. These are:
- A convergence objective: (replacing the current objective 1). This supports the economic growth of poorer regions.
- A competitiveness and employment objective: (replacing the current objectives 2 and 3). To move regions out of crisis and into growth and jobs.
- Co-operation objective: (replacing the current Interreg Community Initiative). To finance European partnership projects.
North Lincolnshire will be eligible for the competitiveness and employment objective, which will offer access to the following funds.
