The creation of a new urban heart and vibrant town centre is a key component of the transformational strategy for Scunthorpe, as identified in the Scunthorpe Development Framework (SDF).
In support of this the council is also looking to improve and expand the town centre and work with serious investors and developers to do this.
Building upon the success of a recent market quarter study that considered the potential for developing a market/cultural quarter in the town, the council, with support from Yorkshire Forward, has commissioned consultants Taylor Young to produce a Scunthorpe town centre masterplan and delivery strategy.
When complete, the masterplan will include plans to improve the public realm and create new opportunities for the town centre evening culture through cultural and recreational developments.
The masterplan will look at Scunthorpe Town Centre as it exists at the moment and suggest potential changes in order to achieve this vision.
More specifically, the masterplan will look at:
- The built environment and urban design, possibly through large-scale redevelopment
- The public realm and surrounding environment, including the production of a landscape and public realm strategy
- Transport and travel within the town centre.
- Linkages and integration with surrounding neighbourhoods and open space
- Connectivity to the rest of North Lincolnshire and from out of town.
As part of the process, residents and stakeholders will be given an opportunity to comment on and feed into the plans for a revitalised town centre.
