Description
Trading Standards enforces and advises on a wide range of consumer protection legislation. Its aims are to develop:
- Confident and knowledgeable consumers
- Modern competitive businesses
- A fair and safe trading environment
Legislation and areas covered include:
- Inspection of weighing and measuring equipment
- Short weight, measure or number
- Composition and labelling of food, animal feeding stuffs and fertiliser
- False or misleading descriptions about goods, services and houses
- Safety of consumer products including unroadworthy cars
- Misleading advertising and pricing
- Consumer credit including loan sharks and harassment of debtors
- Counterfeit goods and copyright infringements
- Animal health and welfare
- Age restricted sales e.g. alcohol, cigarettes, fireworks
- Licensing of premises storing and selling petrol, poisons, explosives and fireworks
- Registration of owners of performing animals and dealers in secondhand goods
- Distance sales including internet purchasing
- Advice for consumers and businesses concerning their statutory rights and responsibilities and help to resolve complaints through mediation or action in the county court
- Consumer education including talks to schools and organisations
- Guidance, practical advice and training for businesses
- Scams and rogue traders
