What happens to my benefits if my circumstances change?

Changes in your circumstances could affect the amount of benefit you are entitled to. For example, if your income goes up, your benefit may go down.

You have a legal duty to notify the Benefits section, in writing, if your circumstances change or if you wish to cancel your benefit claim.

Change of circumstances form

You can use our online change of circumstances form to tell us about any changes.

Examples of changing circumstances include:

  • You/your partner stop/start getting income support or jobseeker's allowance (income based) or the type of jobseeker's allowance changes
  • You/your partner are awarded another benefit
  • There are changes to you/your partner's wage or other income or capital
  • Somebody moves in or out of your home. This is even if it is only temporarily
  • If you or a member of your household go into hospital as an inpatient.
  • You change address. This is even if this is just to another room in the same property
  • Changes in your rent or the services provided; any change in the income of adults living in your home
  • You get married/separated.

You should tell us immediately if your circumstances change and the date that this happens.

If the change means that you get more benefit but you do not tell us about this within one month of the change, your benefit will only increase from when you tell us. Any other change will take place from when it happens.

If your benefit goes down, you may have been overpaid benefit. This will generally be recovered from you. For more information, please go to the overpayments page.

If you are in any doubt please contact the Benefits section on 01724 296131.
