PR 2904
North Lincolnshire Council is to inject £50,000 to deliver the Museum service on the move – thanks to a successful bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The outreach project called Museums on the Move will focus on delivering access to museum objects for priority audiences – those living in rural areas, older people and families.
This exciting project will involve creating a brand new post – loans development assistant. Funded for two years, he/she will work with these groups and co-ordinate the production of new loan packs, activity sessions and a new catalogue.
The Museum will train up volunteers to deliver handling activities in community settings. These include day centres, nurseries and village halls.
The council hopes to develop new ways of using Museum objects for reminiscence and to inspire creativity and play.
The council will open up Museum stores. This will enable volunteers to select objects and learn more about them from curators and education staff.
Museums on the Move will visit other exciting venues. These include village shows to enable people to get closer to their heritage and share their memories of the local area.
These memories and experiences will feed back into the development of new loans boxes and temporary display cases at the Museum.
The project will also benefit local schools and community groups who already use the loans service.
Community groups and individuals interested in the project should contact Vicky
Richardson, Museums Education Officer on 01724 297055.
Cllr Ivan Glover, Cabinet Member for Housing and Leisure at North Lincolnshire Council, said:
"We are grateful to the Heritage Lottery Fund for giving us the money to
provide this vital service to hard-to-reach people living in North Lincolnshire.
There are many people who find it difficult getting to the Museum. Rather
than alienate these people, we want them to be able to enjoy the same experience
as everyone else. The
"Museum on the Move project will do just that. This is an exciting and
worthwhile project that will benefit many people."
